5 Innovative Trends in Life Sciences Right Now

Tuesday, 20th Jul 2021

iST-5-trends-in-life-sciences-blog

While many people can look at life scientists and see their attention to the detail of their craft, the end goal is always the bigger picture: the betterment of humanity through improved health, deeper understanding, and looking towards the future. Since life sciences thrives on innovation, iST Scientific wants to give you a look at the five most important trends in life sciences right now.

Trend 1 – The Effects of COVID

Like every other industry that has had to adapt, overcome, and re-think its outlook, the life sciences industry has had to change the way it thinks due to the pandemic. One of the main effects of COVID-19 on life sciences has been to scrutinise supply chains. Having supply chains that originated in China suddenly became a hindrance, and life sciences companies found themselves having to adapt to a more localised structure.

Trend 2 – The Rise of Personalised Medicine

Personalised medicine’ is a newly coined phrase that has come from investigating the host rather than just the problem. Instead of focusing research on diseases, personalised medicine takes the view that diagnoses can be obtained faster and more accurately through a deeper understanding of our internal building blocks: DNA. This makes dealing with illnesses less about crisis management and more about understanding the specific problem based on your unique body chemistry.

Trend 3 – Lab Automation

COVID-19 has made each profession and industry prioritise our health and safety in the workplace. What better way to make sure that there are as few humans as possible in an area than automation? Automation offers faster production, more accurate results, and allows the humans who program and control these machines to better use their innovation to create newer and better ways to produce life sciences materials.

Trend 4 – Lab Trial Progression

A speeding-up of lab trials did not start in the wake of COVID-19. Rather, this lab trial progression began during the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The hyper-contagious and deadly disease was in need of a vaccine fast. Changing lab trials to have a quicker progression to combat Ebola was integral to the COVID-19 vaccine being developed so quickly. Faster lab trials mean faster production – so life sciences as well has had to adapt to the demands of speed and accuracy.

Trend 5 – Increased Investment into Life Science Research

The UK Government has realised that with increased investment and encouragement, the tragedies and loss of life that happened during this pandemic can be curtailed in the future. As we have mentioned, life sciences thrives on innovation and an ambition to tackle the largest healthcare problems that we have to deal with. With increased investment, these goals (and our collective health as a species) become a little easier.

With our cutting-edge cleanrooms and our ear to the ground regarding industry trends, iST Scientific is committed to providing the most innovative and useful laboratory equipment and consumables. If you are interested in partnering with iST Scientific as your lab consumables supplier, please contact us.
